Foreword
AIthough science is said to advance through the slow accumulation of knowledge, neuroscience seems to progress at a breakneck pace that is reflected incrementally in each of the five previous editions of Professor Bhatnagar’s Neuroscience for the Study of Communicative Disorders, from the publication of the first edition in 1995 to the fifth published in 2018. Advances in neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, neuropharmacology, bedrocks of the discipline, the linkage of disease and impairment to the basic neurology and their clinical manifestations are clearly presented in this sixth edition. Dr. Bhatnagar’s carefully selected content for each chapter reflects the advanced pedagogical and clinical knowledge and experience of the author and make this a preeminently competitive text and reference book for all communication science students and professionals. The text’s relevance is not, however, restricted to that discipline. Indeed, the breadth and depth of the information covered in this text can serve as a foundation for many disciplines. Although the depth of content in each section is necessarily and appropriately detailed, the experience of one that has taught this material at multiple levels of the academy is evident in what is included and what is not. This experience is evident in how the material is organized, presented, and reinforced through clinical case studies for each chapter, web-based related materials, a repository of multiple-choice questions, videos of brain dissection, excellent illustrations, tables, and elaboration boxes. This edition reflects the rapid accumulation of knowledge in neuroscience and lives up to the sequential increase in quality of its five predecessors. With sincere gratitude for a career dedicated to scholarship and authorship, it is a pleasure to provide him and his coauthors the forward to this sixth edition of Neuroscience for Communicative Disorders.

Preface
The impetus that led to this book’s first edition in the early 1990s was the growing realization in the profession that the functional concepts of neuroscience had become critical to the clinical understanding and effective treatment of cognitive-communicative disorders. The idea to integrate a foundational education in neuroscience with speech- language-hearing pathology curriculum was first floated to Subhash C. Bhatnagar by a cognitive neurosurgeon named Orlando J. Andy, who wanted to measure the effects of reticular stimulation on language functions. His conviction and partnership started the 30-year journey that this book and its many editions have enjoyed.
The aspiration of this project is to establish a manner of teaching neuroscience that makes the subject’s many complexities simpler, understandable, and meaningful to the student. Thirty years later, we are still looking for ways to further this mission. In this sixth edition of Neuroscience for Communicative Disorders, we have further updated and revised our core content to better enhance it for application in the clinical context. We have incorporated recent concepts in neuroscience and attempted to illustrate them clearly and convincingly, ranging from neuroimaging, dynamic connectivity, to cellular metabolic responses to human behaviors.

Instructors are suggested to use their discretion on the use of information covered in asterisked Chapters 5 (Nerve Cell Physiology), 10 (Vestibular System), 18 (Axial-Limbic Brain: Autonomic Nervous System, Limbic System, Hypothalamus, and Reticular Formation), and 19 (Cerebral Cortex: Higher Mental Functions), which contain important subjects but may not be central to an introductory understanding of neuroscience.
We encourage an approach to teaching this complex and nuanced material that, just like our approach in producing it, was meant to be consistent with Albert Einstein’s famous dictum “Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler.”
