Long-Term Memory Storage and Retrieval
Where in the brain is the “what” and “where” information stored? The projections of “what” and “where” information from the neocortex into the hippocampus described in the previous section are matched by a simi- lar outflow from the hippocampus that travels back to the entorhinal cortex, then to the perirhinal and parahippocampal cortex, and then to the neocortical areas that provided the inputs to the neocortex in the first place. You may already have guessed the role of this feedback system in memory storage and retrieval, and some findings from neuroimaging studies during retrieval may back up your guess.
Mark Wheeler and his colleagues at Washington University in St. Louis (M. E. Wheeler et al., 2000) investigated brain regions involved in the retrieval of different types of information. They asked participants to learn a set of sounds (auditory stimuli) or pictures (visual stimuli) during a 2-day encoding period. Each sound or picture was paired with a written label describing the item (e.g., the word BELL, followed by the sound of a bell). On the third day the participants were given perceptual and memory tests while in an fMRI scanner. In the perceptual test, stimuli (label plus sound or picture) were presented, and brain activity was measured to identify brain regions involved in the perceptual processing of items. In the memory retrieval test, only the written label was presented, and the participant pressed a button to indicate whether the item was associated with a sound or a picture.
Wheeler and coworkers found that during the retrieval of pictures, regions of neocortex that had been activated during perception of the pictures were reactivated. Simi- larly, during the retrieval of sounds, different areas of the neocortex that had been activated during the perception of sounds were reactivated. In each case during memory retrieval, the modality-specific regions of activity in the neocortex were subsets of the areas activated by presentation of the perceptual information alone, when no memory task was required (Figure 9.31). The activated areas of sensory-specific neocortex were not lower-level sensory cortical regions; they were later stages of visual and auditory association cortex, where incoming signals would have been perceptually well processed (e.g., to the point where identity was coded).

These results suggest that the specific relational information for items stored in long-term memory may be coded during retrieval by reactivation of the neocortical areas that provided input to the hippocampus during the original encoding. In subsequent work, Wheeler and colleagues (M. E. Wheeler et al., 2006) showed that visual processing regions in inferior temporal cortex were involved in the preparation to retrieve visual information, whereas the more dorsal parietal and superior occipital activity was related to the process of searching memory for the relevant item. These findings help refine the role of different brain regions in reactivation during long-term memory retrieval.
RETRIEVAL ERRORS: FALSE MEMORIES AND THE MEDIAL TEMPORAL LOBE When our memory fails, we usually forget events that happened in the past. Sometimes, however, something more surprising occurs: We remember events that never happened. Whereas forgetting has been a topic of research for more than a century, memory researchers did not have a good method to investigate false memories in the laboratory until Henry Roediger and Kathleen McDermott, also at Washington University in St. Louis, rediscovered an old technique in 1995.
In this technique, participants are presented with a list of words (e.g., thread, pin, eye, sewing, sharp, point, haystack, pain, injection, etc.) that are all highly associated with a word that is not presented (in this case, needle; did you have to go back and recheck the list?). When participants are asked subsequently to recall or recognize the words in the list, they show a strong tendency to falsely remember the associated word that was not pre- sented. False memories of this nature have been shown not only for semantically related words, but also for items that share conceptual as well as perceptual overlap with studied items. This should not be surprising, since the dominant left hemisphere falsely recognizes new pictures related to the “gist” of a story (see Figure 4.30), while the right hemisphere rarely makes that mistake.
This memory illusion is so powerful that participants often report having a vivid memory of seeing the nonpresented critical item in the study list. For example, in another study, researchers edited childhood photographs of their volunteers into a picture of a hot-air balloon ride (Figure 9.32). Although none of the participants had ever actually been in a hot- air balloon, when they were asked to describe their flying experience, 50% of them created false childhood memories (K. A. Wade et al., 2002). During the debriefing session when the participants were told that the picture had been doctored, one of them commented, “That’s amazing, ’cause I honestly started to talk myself into believing it! … I still feel in my head that I actually was there; I can sort of see images of it, but not distinctly, but yeah. Gosh, that’s amazing!”

The vividness of such memories makes it difficult to separate the cognitive and neural basis of true and false memories. Despite this difficulty, when participants are interrogated carefully about the conscious experience associated with remembering true and false items, they tend to rate true items higher than false items in terms of sensory details (Mather et al., 1997; Norman & Schacter, 1997). This difference is often reflected by greater neural activation in the medial temporal lobe and sensory processing regions for true compared to false memories (Dennis et al., 2012; Slotnick & Schacter, 2004).
What makes individuals believe their illusionary recollections? A recent meta-analysis of brain studies attempted to answer this question (Kurkela & Dennis, 2016). Examining many different instances of false memories, the researchers showed that false memories actually do elicit activity in the same retrieval net- works that true memories activate. However, there are differences in the degree of brain activity in portions of the retrieval network for true and false memories.
True memories are associated with greater activity in the medial temporal lobe and sensory areas (Figure 9.33a), which are activated when a true item is first presented. In contrast, false memories are associated with greater activity in frontal and parietal portions of the retrieval network (Figure 9.33b). One way these differences in brain activity can be understood is to appreciate that true memories are for items actually seen and therefore activate both sensory areas and the medial temporal lobe. However, false memories do not activate sensory areas; instead, regions associated with top-down cognitive control are more active for false memories.

The ease with which false memories can be implanted suggests that our episodic memory is naturally malleable. Some researchers argue that our memory systems don’t flawlessly preserve our past experiences, but instead flexibly recombine remembered information from multiple sources an ability that helps solve current problems and anticipates future ones (M. K. Johnson & Sherman, 1990; Schacter et al., 2012), and also enables us to develop rich autobiographical memories of events that may have never happened (Bernstein & Loftus, 2009).
Encoding, Retrieval, and the Frontal Cortex
The earliest neuroimaging studies of amnesic patients consistently found that the frontal cortex was involved in both short-term and long-term memory processes, but its role remains debated. A meta-analysis of the early neuroimaging literature done in 1996 (Nyberg et al., 1996) found that the left frontal cortex was often involved in encoding episodic information, whereas the right frontal cortex was often found to be activated in episodic retrieval.

A dominant theory of memory processing that arose from these studies was the hemispheric encoding/retrieval asymmetry, or HERA, model (Tulving et al., 1994), which posited that episodic encoding was predominantly a left-hemisphere process, while episodic retrieval was predominantly a right-hemisphere process. This theory, however, ignored the fact that split-brain patients are not amnesic (M. B. Miller et al., 1997).
Others, including William Kelley at Dartmouth College and his colleagues, argued that lateralization of frontal cortex activity during long-term memory retrieval is related more to the nature of the material being processed than to a distinction between encoding and retrieval (Kelley et al., 1998). Figure 9.34 shows that both semantic encoding and retrieval involve the left frontal cortex, including Broca’s area (Brodmann area 44, extending into area 46) and the ventrolateral region (Brodmann areas 44 and 45). This lateraliza- tion to the left hemisphere for semantic information remains, regardless of whether the memories being re- trieved are of objects or of words. These findings suggest that the left hemisphere is more involved in processes coded by linguistic representations, whereas the right frontal cortex is more involved in object and spatial memory information.
In 2011, Hongkeun Kim at Daegu University in South Korea did a meta-analysis of 74 fMRI studies involving either subsequent memory (SM), subsequent forgetting (SF), or both. The main finding was that SM effects are most consistently associated with five neural regions: left inferior frontal cortex (IFC), bilateral fusi- form cortex, bilateral hippocampal formation, bilateral premotor cortex (PMC), and bilateral posterior pari- etal cortex (PPC). While all of the studies used visual “events,” some used words and others used pictures; some used single-item memory tasks and others used associative memory tasks.
Different areas were preferentially activated for words and pictures, and for specific items and associated items. For example, greater SM effects were seen in the left IFC with the encoding of verbal material compared to pictorial material, whereas those effects were reversed for the fusiform cortex and the bilateral hippocampal regions. In fact, the left hippocampal region showed greater SM effects during pictorial associative versus pictorial single-item encoding. Interestingly, SF effects were associated mostly with activations in default-network regions, which are active during mind wandering (as we will see in Chapter 13). Kim suggests that activation of these regions during encoding may take neural resources away from the processes that lead to effective remembering, resulting in subsequent forgetting.
Is the IFC necessary for episodic memory formation? The first study demonstrating that transient disruption to neural processes localized to part of the inferior frontal gyrus impacts the formation of episodic memory was done by Itamar Kahn and his colleagues (2005). They applied single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (spTMS) to the left and right posterior ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (posterior vIPFC), located on the inferior frontal gyrus, regions that had previously been identified as correlated with episodic memory encoding during a syllable task.
While participants in the study decided how many syllables were in visually presented familiar and unfamiliar (English-appearing but nonsense) words, spTMS was applied over the posterior vIPFC to disrupt processing at different times after the stimulus was presented. After- ward, participants’ memory for the words was measured. The researchers found that disrupting the processing of the left posterior vIPFC during the encoding of familiar words impaired subsequent memory. In contrast, disrupting the right posterior vIPFC facilitated subsequent memory for familiar words and increased the accuracy of the participants’ syllable decisions.
These findings suggest that processing in the left posterior vIPFC is necessary for effective episodic memory encoding, at least of words, and that disrupting the right posterior vIPFC appears to facilitate the encoding of words. With the role of the right posterior vIPFC in visual spatial attention in mind, the researchers suggested that perhaps disrupting its processing triggers a shift to reliance on more effective verbal learning mechanisms.
While fMRI studies lack the temporal resolution required to identify the sequence of activations underlying memory encoding, EEG is up to the task. Subsequent- memory analyses are currently being used with intracranial and extracranial EEG recordings. For example, John Burke and his colleagues (2014) recorded intracranial EEG activations from 98 surgical patients. They found that successfully encoding a memory invokes two spatio- temporally distinct activations: Early activations involve the ventral visual pathway and the medial temporal lobe, while later activations involve the left inferior frontal gyrus, left posterior parietal cortex, and left ventrolateral temporal cortex. The researchers speculate that these activity patterns may reflect higher-order visual processing, followed by top-down modulation of attention and semantic information. By looking at shifts in the EEG activations, the researchers were able to predict successful memory formation.
